Karmic, Soulmate, Twin Flame — Understanding the Purpose of Each Connection

Karmic, soulmate and twin flame connections illustrated through emotional and spiritual energy

If you’ve landed here, chances are you’ve heard these terms before and you’re wondering what they really are and what they actually mean.

We’ve all heard of soulmates. That’s the most common term, and it’s been around for many moons, across many generations. So that one isn’t new to most of us.

But twin flames and karmics are the ones that have been spoken about much more over the past few years. They’ve made their way into conversations, spiritual spaces, and even music, like Machine Gun Kelly’s Twin Flame.

So how do you know whether you’re dealing with a karmic, a soulmate, or a twin flame?

Let’s break it down. I’ll do my best to make it as clear as possible through my own personal experience, perspective, and knowledge.

Everyone has their own understanding and way of explaining these connections, but at the core, the meaning tends to be very similar.

Karmic Connections — The Lesson

I’ve decided to rip the band-aid off and start with karmic connections.

So brace yourself for this.

Karmic relationships often begin with intensity. They can confuse you into thinking they’re your twin flame — but that illusion will quickly fade once you experience the turbulence that comes with it.

There’s often a level of toxicity involved. You may feel drawn to them because you’re coming from a place of not feeling whole. It carries that Devil (tarot) energy — codependency, obsession, control.

You may think it’s love or a soul-level connection, but it’s not. The attraction isn’t truly soul-based, it’s often physical or rooted in attachment. And you may find yourself doing anything to keep the connection going, even if it means losing yourself or sacrificing your time and energy.

I say this from experience. I’ve had my fair share of karmic connections, and with one in particular left a deep mark. It’s something I would describe as a very traumatising experience. I’ve learnt from it, I’ve grown from it, but it’s something I’ll definitely never forget.

And yet, I appreciate the lesson. Because it brought me to where I am today, knowing my self-worth, knowing what I want, and understanding what a healthy relationship should feel like.

There is a strong pull and an emotional depth that can feel hard to walk away from. But over time, you may start to notice a pattern — cycles that repeat, emotions that fluctuate, and a sense that something feels off even when you try to make it work.

These connections are not here to last. They are here to show you what needs to be healed.

A karmic connection will often highlight your boundaries, your self-worth, and the patterns you’ve been unconsciously carrying. It can feel consuming, even draining at times, because it is constantly bringing your attention back to what needs to change.

Good news is, karmic relationships are not meant to last. They often end like a Tower moment — sudden, intense, and final. And you’ll never hear from them again.

The lesson is in recognising when it no longer aligns and having the strength to walk away.

Soulmates — The Alignment

Now moving on to soulmates.

The most talked about one — the one you always hear people say, “I’m looking for my soulmate, my other half.”

Soulmate connections feel different. It has depth, but also ease. You don’t feel like you have to constantly question where you stand or fight to maintain the connection. They often feel like your best friend.

There is mutual understanding, emotional stability, and a sense of peace that comes naturally.

We have more than one soulmates. I once read somewhere that we actually have eight soulmates, and they are not all necessarily romantic. They can come in the form of friends or even family members. So the connection isn’t about “the one and only” because it does exist in different forms.

A soulmate is not necessarily someone who completes you, but someone who walks alongside you. The connection supports your growth without forcing it through chaos.

You feel seen, supported, and safe to be yourself. There is effort, but it is balanced. Growth happens, but it doesn’t come from pain or instability.

Not all meaningful love is meant to challenge you.

Some are meant to feel safe.

Twin Flames — The Mirror

Alright, the moment of the hour.

The one you hear about the most these days — the twin flame.

There are many different opinions and perspectives on this connection.

Some would even call it toxic.

But for those who see it that way, they’re often confusing it with a karmic connection.

Because twin flames are one of the most misunderstood connections.

They are intense, magnetic, and deeply transformative. There is a sense of recognition that goes beyond logic, as if you’ve known this person on a deeper level.

It can feel like a calming peace — like the calm after the storm.

You feel drawn to their soul. It’s as if you fall in love with their soul before you fall for the person.

You can sit in silence together and still feel everything.

The warmth, the calm, the connection — even when nothing is being said.

And you may begin to notice signs and synchronicities.

Angel numbers like 111, 222, 333, 444, 555, 777, 1010, 717.

As well as you will notice the mirroring — emotional and even physical.

At least, that was my experience — the signs kept appearing, making the connection known.

Not just angel numbers but visions and vivid dreams as well.

But unlike soulmate connections, twin flames do not come in to bring immediate peace. They come in to reflect you. They are your twin and that is where the mirroring comes from.

There is often a push and pull dynamic. One may be hot and cold, while the other questions the connection despite everything they feel.

This connection will trigger parts of you that have been hidden, unhealed, or avoided.

Moments of closeness may be followed by distance or separation.

You’ll often hear about the separation phase, the runner and chaser dynamic, and the different stages of the connection — union, separation, awakening, and reunion.

The separation phase can be especially difficult, particularly for the “chaser.” Even when you are physically apart, your souls remain energetically connected, and at times, you may feel as though you are communicating telepathically — even through dreams.

It’s often said that the divine feminine takes on this role, while the divine masculine pulls away, unable to handle the intensity of the connection.

And this is not about instability for the sake of it. It is about growth.

A twin flame forces you to face yourself. Your fears, your patterns, your attachments — everything comes to the surface.

You’re meant to work through it, to go through a spiritual awakening, and eventually come into reunion.

And it all happens in divine timing.

During this period, the divine feminine is often called to stand in her power —detach from the outcome and focus on self-growth, self-love, and purpose. The more the focus stays on the other person, the more it can delay that reunion.

While the divine masculine — often taking on the runner or avoidant role — is working through inner wounds and gradually awakening to the connection.

Now, this isn’t about gender. It’s about the energy each person is embodying within the connection.

At least, that’s what’s commonly shared about the separation phase — and it makes sense, because this is ultimately a journey back to yourself then coming into alignment together and fulfiling a purpose.

The purpose of this connection is not the other person.

It is who you become through it.

So yes, the journey is difficult but it is a beautiful connection. It is fulfilling in all areas.

But it requires the work and patience.

And that’s the point, because your growth is meant to be continuous.

How To Tell The Difference

The easiest way to understand what you’re experiencing is not by labels, but by how it feels within you.

A karmic connection often leaves you feeling confused and emotionally drained, caught in cycles you can’t seem to break.

A soulmate connection brings a sense of stability and peace, where growth feels natural and supported.

A twin flame connection feels intense, magnetic and transformative, often pushing you into deep self-reflection and growth within.

Your body and your intuition will always recognise the truth before your mind does.

Not every connection is meant to stay in your life.

Especially a Karmic.

Walk away and never look back.

But all in all…

Some are here to teach you what you deserve.

Some are here to walk with you as you grow.

And some are here to transform you from within.

When you understand the purpose of each, you naturally release what no longer aligns with you.

So… I hope this helps whether you were simply curious about these terms or trying to understand your current connection.

Maybe in future I could dive a little more deeper with the Twin Flame connection.

But until then, always trust your discernment…

and speak to your spirit guides if you need guidance along the way.

Affirmation:

I trust my intuition to guide me to what is right for me.

I release what no longer aligns with my growth

I choose connections that feel safe, balanced, and true.

I do not chase what is not meant for me.

I am open to receiving love that matches my energy and meets me where I am, effortlessly.

Work With Your Inner Magic

Take a moment to sit with your current connection.

Be honest with yourself about how it truly feels, not what you hope it could be.
